To My Depths



To my Depths  

Somewhere in the center of conflicting waves of joviality and dread
were enlightened  depths of self realization .
A Tsunami of unrest had churned and surfaced an Id where desire was bred.   
 

I harbor my conscious need for wide eyed righteousness and hope.
My Island of denial, is now behind me.
In this emotional sea,  I anchor anxiety and float my ability to cope.  
 

Set free of antithetical suppression,  the depths of my self  I can face.  
With a eye and ear for my spirit,
In my wake, ambiguity gives way; a lighthouse of clarity is what I embrace.   

Drawn to my depths, where my truths wash ashore,
I am the sea and the earth my floor.
I am the breeze and the sky my ceiling.
Now boundless are the depths of all I am feeling.

An Old Fashioned Treat for Spring


This is a recipe, for lovely cookies, that was given to me by my Grandmother. She and the ladies in her neighborhood passed this old recipe to each other over clothes lines, garden borders and kitchen tables many years ago. Welsh Cookies , as my Grandmother would call them, are  particularly popular in the Northern States, often seen at bake sales and social functions. They are not super sweet, really more aromatic from the nutmeg in them.  Raisins lend a natural sweetness to them. I hope you will try them ... They are buttery and delicious! A note- I often cut this recipe in half when I make them. If you have say, a family of four, then full recipe works.  I 'fry' them on a non stick fry pan- here's the thing.. to 'fry' them, you need only lightly wipe the pan with oil once. You don't want to pour oil into the pan,  or you'll ruin the cookies.  

Welsh Cookies
2 eggs
1/2 cup Milk
1 cup Sugar
1 cup Butter, softened
3 tsp. Baking Powder
1 tsp. Baking soda
1 tsp. Nutmeg
3 cups + Flour
1 cup Raisins

Mix ingredients. Pinch and pat the dough into approx.  2 inch flat and rounded cookies. They should resemble a little pancake before 'frying'.  You may need to dust your hands with flour and work a little bit of flour onto the very outside of each cookie in order to form the little pancake shape.


'Fry' the cookies until the bottoms of the cookies become lightly golden. Then flip each cookie over and press each cookie to the pan, flattening the cookies,  with your turner. As shown. Continue to 'fry' until the second side of the cookie is golden.

She Sits In Wonderment


She sits in wonderment
This girl in me
Watching time tick away,
To a place where clarity is held at bay.    
She runs to the forest
For a moment of zen
Seeking the path to the enlightened when.  
She lies in tall grass
And looks to the sagacious sky
Queries the clouds about all of the whys.
She reaches for the key
To the door from despair
Heads to the precipice of she knows not where.
Past the darkened forest
Through the churning cloud
Over the mountainous edge
Where clarity sings aloud.
Then comes the realization
That there is no other place
For truth and light and courage
Than within her knowing face.
Her mind has tamed the forest,
Her eyes have pierced the cloud,
Her spirit leaps the mountain
Then doubt is disavowed.

Little Wren



I wrote this poem when I was reflecting on the years that my Daughter was growing up. Particularly when she reached an age when she needed to assert her independence. How difficult for a Parent to step away to a degree and disengage from the mode of wanting to protect and control all of the decision making. It was necessary to allow her to become the strong and independent woman she is today. I am so proud of the woman she has become.  

Little Wren be strong and true
An open wing to soar through blue.
Close not your mind to life’s sweet call
The wind will catch you if you fall.
Take lessons from your fledgling nest
Then live the life that you think best.

Fine Line



I often build irony into my poetry. I do that because looking at the absurdity that irony provides is sometimes more powerful, for me, than simply looking at something from a direct vantage point.
And this poem is no exception. I wrote this poem quite some time ago to ironically frame the mistake of isolating our 'self ' from what lies beyond our own perceived reality.  Staunchly remaining the fine line, if you will. It is a comfort to some,  to cling to the familiar and to sequester the 'self', with an unwillingness to engage other knowledge, experience and perspective.  Our perceptions do color how we experience the world and how we live, and there is value in that. However, living in judgment or denial of what is 'out there', without stepping 'out there' is not enough to constitute living. The truth is, in order to truly live, we must step beyond the fine line that is our self in order to gain further knowledge, experience and perspective on living. The outcome may mean success, or it may mean failure. It may lead us to despair or it may lead us to hope. But, in doing so, we subsequently can grow in our life. It is only after we have taken the step, that our perspective and subsequent choices become educated and relevant to a life fully lived. Hopefully, in taking the step, we can look beyond the value of what is within us, and embrace the eternal yes that awaits us.

Savory Quinoa Pilaf


Those who have followed me for some time now, know that my Kitchen is my playground. I love to cook and bake.  Taking random ingredients and coming up with new recipes is another art form for me.  I also enjoy taking an existing recipe and making it my own by adding my own touches. The following is a Pilaf that I came up with to accompany Roasted Chicken Breasts. I hope you will give it a try, and enjoy .

1 tblsp Extra Virgin Olive Oil
1/2 small Onion, finely diced
1 cup Quinoa, rinsed and drained
1 14.5 oz. can Low Sodium Chicken Broth
1 tsp. Garam Masala
1 tsp French Tarragon, dried
1/2 cup Raisins
1/2 cup Slivered Almonds, toasted

Heat Olive Oil in a medium sauce pan. Add diced onion and cook over medium heat until tender, slightly carmelized. Add in Quinoa, French Tarragon and Garam Masala and toast over the heat for approx. 1 minute, stirring constantly.
Stir in the chicken broth and bring to a boil. Cover and simmer for 10 minutes. Add the Raisins. Continue to simmer until the liquid is completely absorbed and the Quinoa is tender. Finally, toss in the toasted almonds.

Enjoy this side dish and reap the benefits of healthy eating as well. Quinoa, is actually a relative to leafy green vegetables. It is in fact, a complete protein, as it has all nine amino acids necessary for building muscle. It is a marvelous fiber source and has anti-oxidant properties. All of this, with a wonderful nutty flavor.

Love Has Led Me Home



Love has led me home. 
Though I have never looked upon Love's elusive face
nor heard his silenced name,
He has led me to a new and truer place,
Where joy waits for my awakened aim.  


Love's language of truth has spoken to me
With words my heart can understand and know.
Love illuminates beautifully, all that could be
That could blossom and could grow.


Love's quilt of clarity, should bring comfort to plight,
but simply carries the promise of the unknown.
I face the revelations found in Love's light,
enlightened, but alone.  


Love's presence is not palpable for me
But his essence grows in my soul
No hand in mine, no one tangible to see
But his example of what love should feel like, has lead me to the love in me. 
Love has led me home.
